April 27 // Obey the rules.

Read Numbers 22:22 out loud with your family.

Ask the following question and discuss the answer together as a family.

Q: What rule might you try to break if you didn’t think you would get caught?

Parent Note: Rules were made to keep us safe, healthy, and good. When we break rules like staying up late, we’re not getting enough rest to get us through all of the activities of the next day. Not getting enough sleep makes us less attentive and usually a bit cranky. Not getting caught means that we may not get punished, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have to deal with the consequences of breaking the rule, which was set for a good reason. God told Balaam not to go to Moab unless the messengers called for him. Balaam packed up his stuff and headed toward Moab without waiting for them to call on him. Getting caught, called out on his sin, and seeing the threat of punishment was what stopped Balaam from carrying out his plan. A better plan is understanding that God and other authority figures, such as parents and the police, create and enforce rules set up to protect us.

Read the following prayer out loud. Have your kids repeat after you:

Dear Lord, thank You for Your good rules.
I know that You are there to forgive me even when I mess up.
Help me to obey and follow You.
We ask these things in Jesus' name, Amen
