September 3 // Ask Jesus for help.

Read Matthew 14:16 out loud with your family.

Ask the following question and discuss the answer together as a family.

Q: Have you ever helped cook a meal for your family?

Parent Note: Cooking a meal for a few people can be tricky, but imagine making sure that 5,000 people were fed! This difficult task was complicated by the fact that the people were already hungry and the disciples didn't exactly have an abundance of ingredients from which to choose. They felt Jesus had given them an impossible job, but really, Jesus was giving them an opportunity. This was a chance for the disciples to recognize who Jesus was and rely on His power. While Jesus isn't a genie in a bottle who grants us all of our wishes, it should have occurred to the disciples to ask Jesus if He could help.

Read the following prayer out loud. Have your kids repeat after you:

Dear Lord, thank You for being my Helper.
I know that I can ask You for whatever I need.
Please help me to trust You enough to ask for help.
We ask these things in Jesus’ name, Amen.
