August 29 // Be a disciple.

Read Matthew 4:18 out loud with your family.

Ask the following question and discuss the answer together as a family.

Q: If Jesus’ mission were to take place today, would He ask the president or a truck driver to be a disciple?

Parent Note: There is no right answer to this question because we can’t know the thoughts of Jesus. However, based on His choices during His actual ministry, it seems likely that He would choose a truck driver over the president. Knowing this should not discourage us from trying to do our best at becoming whatever we feel led to be. There is nothing wrong with aspiring to be the president or the boss of a huge company, just as there is nothing wrong with being a truck driver or a fisherman; God can use anyone, in any role, to do amazing things that glorify God.

Read the following prayer out loud. Have your kids repeat after you:

Dear Lord, thank You for loving me the way that I am.
I know that it doesn’t matter how smart, funny, or popular I am, You can still use me.
Please help me to drop everything like the disciples and follow You.
We ask these things in Jesus’ name, Amen.
