October 2 Recap & Devo

10.02.16

TODAY’S OVERVIEW:

BIBLE STORY:

PARABLE OF THE SOWER

BIBLE PASSAGE:

MATTHEW 13:1-23

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

“Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being sure of what we do not see.” - HEBREWS 11:1

CHRIST CONNECTION:

Like a seed, faith in Jesus needs to grow.

BOTTOM LINE:

We can trust the Word of God.

TABLE TALK:

Open your bibles to today’s passage. Read it together as a family.

  • Have you ever planted a seed before? What kind of soil did you plant it in? What did you have to do to take care of the seed?
  • This bible passage is a “parable”- which is a kind of story that Jesus used to teach people. The seed Jesus talked about actually stands for something else. What did Jesus say the seed was? (God’s Word)
  • What do you think the soils represent? (the heart of the person hearing God’s Word)
  • Why do you think Jesus used parables like this to teach us?
  • What kind of soil does God want us to be like?
  • What kind of soil is your heart like right now? What can you do to have a heart that pleases God?

AFFIRMATION:

To affirm someone is to tell them what you know to be true about them. We can see affirmation used to uplift people in Scripture. (ex: Paul’s letters to the churches; see Philemon 1:4-7).

Take this time to encourage each member of your family through affirmation.

How do you see them becoming more like Jesus? What makes you thankful for them? Share these things with one another now as a family.

FAMILY PRAYER:

Read the following prayer out loud. Have your kids repeat after you:

Dear God, thank you for always being there for me

You are perfect and wise

Please give me wisdom to understand your Word and obey it

In Jesus’ name, amen

THIS MONTH’S FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: KINDNESS

Talk about a time someone was kind to you. How did you feel?

Talk about a time someone was unkind to you. How did you feel?

How do we see kindness in today’s bible story?
