August 2 Recap & Devotional

08.02.15

TODAY’S OVERVIEW:

BIBLE STORY:

JONAH & THE BIG FISH

BIBLE PASSAGE:

BOOK OF JONAH

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

“He is patient with you. He doesn’t want anyone to be destroyed. Instead, he wants all people to turn away from their sins.” - 2 PETER 3:9

CHRIST CONNECTION:

Like God showed mercy to Nineveh, He shows us mercy through forgiveness in Jesus.

BOTTOM LINE:

God is merciful.

TABLE TALK:

Ask your child to retell the story of Jonah using their own words.

What did God tell Jonah to do? Did Jonah obey?

What is “mercy?” Why did God show mercy to the people of Nineveh?

Read today’s memory verse out loud. How does this verse remind you of today’s bible story?

Think about a time you needed forgiveness. Did someone show you mercy? How did it feel?

How can you be forgiven?

AFFIRMATION:

To affirm someone is to tell them what you know to be true about them. We can see affirmation used to uplift people in Scripture. (ex: Paul’s letters to the churches; see Philemon 1:4-7).

Take this time to encourage each member of your family through affirmation.

How do you see them becoming more like Jesus? What makes you thankful for them? Share these things with one another now as a family.

FAMILY PRAYER:

Read the following prayer out loud. Have your kids repeat after you:

Dear God, thank you for forgiveness

You are patient and merciful

Please help me to forgive other people, because you’ve forgiven me

In Jesus’ name, amen

THIS MONTH’S FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: OBEDIENCE

As a family, go through the following questions…

What does it mean to obey?

Who are some people in your life that you are supposed to obey?

How can we see obedience in this story?
