June 7 Recap & Devotional

06.07.15

TODAY’S OVERVIEW:

BIBLE STORY:

DAVID & GOLIATH

BIBLE PASSAGE:

1 SAMUEL 17

MEMORY VERSE OF THE DAY:

“I can do all things through him who gives me strength."

PHILIPPIANS 4:13

CHRIST CONNECTION:

Like David, Jesus is a king who fights for his people.

BOTTOM LINE:

We are saved by God’s strength.

TABLE TALK:

Ask your child to retell this Sunday’s bible story to you.

Why did David go to fight Goliath? Why not someone bigger, stronger, or more powerful?

Why didn’t anyone else want to fight Goliath?

Jesus fought something big and scary for his people too. What was it? (sin, death)

Do you think Jesus was afraid? Why or why not? (see Matthew 26:37-39)

Where did David and Jesus get their strength?

What can you do when you are scared or worried about an enemy?

AFFIRMATION:

To affirm someone is to tell them what you know to be true about them. We can see affirmation used to uplift people in Scripture. (ex: Paul’s letters to the churches; see Philemon 1:4-7).

Take this time to encourage each member of your family through affirmation.

How do you see them becoming more like Jesus? What makes you thankful for them? Share these things with one another now as a family.

FAMILY PRAYER:

Read the following prayer out loud. Have your kids repeat after you:

Dear God, thank you for always being with me

You are a good, protective father

Please help me to trust you when facing my enemies

In Jesus’ name, amen

THIS MONTH’S FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT: SELF CONTROL

As a family, go through the following questions…

What is self control?

Is self control easy or hard for you? Why?

How can we see self control in this story?
